SCOTUS Rules Against Working People

But UHP President Bill Garrity says the Janus vs. AFSCME ruling is a defeat in the courtroom only.

(JUNE 27, 2018)--Today the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in the Janus lawsuit — one that hurts all working people and instead favors the billionaires who want to destroy our union. While the 5-4 decision was not unexpected, it adds urgency to ongoing efforts to protect members' pay, retirement security and healthcare.

Our national union is holding two telephone town halls this evening — at 5:00PM and again at 8:00PM — for all members. It's an important opportunity to hear about the impact of the high court's opinion and how the broader labor movement is responding.

Going forward, much work needs to be done — but there are immediate actions you can take today to defend your sisters and brothers from the dark money donors behind Janus:

1. demonstrate unity by sharing photos of your colleagues wearing "U & I in Union" stickers in your workplace;

2. sign our petition to political candidates demanding they reject the special interests attacking public employees' rights and freedoms; &

3. ask your co-workers to join you in these efforts.

Click here to request stickers and petition forms for you and fellow members.

In the labor movement, we know that the most effective defense is a strong offense. These simple acts of solidarity will lay the foundation for engaging members to be "all in" for carrying the fight forward.

More to come, and in solidarity,

Jan Hochadel
President, AFT Connecticut
