For the first time in 10 years, UHP will have a new president.

Shawn Brown, our 1st vice president for collective bargaining since June 2022, defeated incumbent Bill Garrity with 695 of the 1,301 votes cast (53.4%).

“Thank you for all the support through the election,” Shawn said. “Together we made this happen and together we'll continue to make progress and keep UHP a union where all members matter.”

Shawn starts his three-year term as president July 1.

“While this election didn’t go as I would have liked, I am comforted by the fact that UHP is a strong union and President Shawn Brown will have a solid team around him to help lead this great union as I tried to do,” Bill said. “One of my guiding principles has always been to try to leave our union in a better place than it was when our team started. I truly believe I have accomplished this.”

In the other contested race, for vice president for membership activities, Christine Alvarado Judd won 42.9% of the votes in a four-way race with Robin Roark, Elizabeth Barrientos, and Tasha Greenlaw.

“I am incredibly grateful and happy to have been elected,” Christine said. “Visiting so many worksites and meeting UHP members along the way was truly one of the most rewarding parts of this campaign—I learned so much from hearing your stories, ideas, and experiences. I’m excited to bring a renewed sense of community and togetherness to our members and create more opportunities for us to connect and engage with one another.”

“I’m grateful for everyone who voted for me and to have been part of a fair and democratic process,” Elizabeth said. “While I was not elected, I remain committed to supporting our members and contributing to the work of strengthening our union. It’s time to move forward and continue to keep UHP strong!”

“I’d like to congratulate Christine and also acknowledge Elizabeth and Tasha for running,” Robin said. “I’d also like to thank the members of elections committee for all their work.”

“I am proud of all the candidates that campaigned for the VP of membership activities,” Tasha said. “We all did a great job! Congratulations Christine on your new role, and I look forward to participating in all activities with UHP.”

Christine added, “I also want to sincerely thank the three candidates who ran alongside me, and I hope they will join the committee and share their ideas and talents, because I know they each have so much to contribute.”

Special thanks to our Elections Chair Meg Bartos and her committee members for orchestrating this election!

4 Officers Returning, 1 Special Election

The other five UHP Executive Committee positions were unopposed, one of them being Peter Zarabozo for 1st VP for collective bargaining. When Shawn moves into the presidency July 1 and Peter becomes 1st VP, Peter's office of VP for Tier 2 (hourly) employees is vacant and we’ll hold a special election later this year to fill the rest of his term, which ends June 30, 2028.

The unopposed officers who will start new terms July 1 are Treasurer Michelle Proper, VP for Communication Chris DeFrancesco, VP for Political Activities Dawn Thomas, and Recording Secretary Meg Bartos.
